The S.T.E.A.M. Center is a multidisciplinary academic facility designed to support science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics through hands-on learning and collaborative exploration. Located at Saint Stephen’s Episcopal School in Bradenton, Florida, the building creates a new hub for creative inquiry by integrating flexible learning environments, performance space, fabrication facilities, and outdoor classrooms into a cohesive educational framework.

At the heart of the project is a highly adaptable assembly and performance space that supports both academic programming and campus events. A retractable telescopic seating system accommodates more than 300 occupants while allowing the room to transform between multiple configurations. When deployed, tiered seating creates a theater environment with clear sightlines for performances, lectures, and ceremonies. When retracted, the seating disappears into a recessed wall pocket and a removable cover over a recessed seating pit produces a continuous flat floor, enabling the space to host assemblies, exhibitions, and large gatherings. This flexibility allows a single space to support a wide range of educational and community functions.

Surrounding the central assembly space are classrooms, a maker space and scene shop, art gallery and teaching spaces, and a flexible lobby designed to accommodate both daily academic use and larger events. The art gallery provides an environment for student work to be displayed and celebrated, with integrated picture rails and track lighting allowing exhibitions to evolve over time. A north-facing skylight introduces diffuse natural light, enhancing the gallery while minimizing glare.

Outdoor learning spaces extend the building’s educational environment beyond its walls. Covered outdoor classrooms and a teaching garden allow instruction to occur in shaded, open-air environments suited to the Florida climate. The canopy system is designed to harvest rainwater into a future cistern for irrigation, while its structure anticipates the integration of translucent solar panels. These elements support environmental awareness and demonstrate sustainable design strategies.

Material choices reinforce the building’s role as an educational tool. Exposed CMU, reinforced concrete, painted steel, and colorful phenolic rainscreen panels reveal the building’s structure and construction systems. Mechanical, structural, and envelope connections are intentionally visible, allowing the architecture itself to become part of the learning experience. By combining adaptable interior environments, outdoor learning spaces, and expressive construction systems, the S.T.E.A.M. Center provides a dynamic setting where experimentation, creativity, and collaboration can thrive.
